Plum cake

October 17th, 2014 | Food, Other | 2 Comments

One of my ambitions in life is to always have homemade cake or biscuits in the cake tin for after school snacks and elevenses. Of course, I more often than not have nothing whatsoever in the cake tin (not even a shop bought something) but one can always dream. But, today we have plum cake! This […]

So, my baby is 10. A whole decade with our Henry. Such a gorgeous, gorgeous boy! I made him a piñata cake, which he thoroughly enjoyed smashing as you can see!

1959 flan

April 4th, 2014 | Food | 1 Comment

Flan (n.) A baked dish consisting of an open-topped pastry case with a savoury or sweet filling Such an old fashioned word for a pudding. Flan. I rather like it. This is a marshmallow and chocolate flan from my 1959 cook book ‘Exciting Cooking’ and is one of those puddings your Granny used to whip up […]

Duchess cake

September 23rd, 2013 | Food | 2 Comments

So, I tried a recipe from ‘Exciting Cooking’. It’s called Duchess cake which is a short pastry base covered in raspberry jam, an almond-y layer and icing (think Bakewell tart). My little brutes loved the cake!

Exciting Cooking

A penguin cake for the penguin mad birthday boy. Chocolate sponge, cut into penguin-ish shapes, covered in chocolate frosting with white ready to roll icing patches and food colouring painted details. The beaks and feet are jelly beans and the snow is crushed meringue nests. He was delighted!

new oven

March 20th, 2013 | Family, Food | 5 Comments

As our oven gradually stopped being able to reliably heat things (it’s one and only role in life) I as slowly stopped baking. I’ve been surprised by how much I missed it. But now we have a strange new oven. I’m not friends with it yet, but I think we’ll get along just fine in […]

Sunday

February 24th, 2013 | Food, Home | 3 Comments

I made blueberry pancakes for breakfast. We ate them with bananas and too much maple syrup. So far they’ve been the highlight of a rather unexceptional and lazy Sunday. But tonight I’m watching Anna Karenina. So the question is- will it be better than blueberry pancakes?

weekend

February 17th, 2013 | Food, Other | 2 Comments

I have three new loves this weekend- it’s been a good one! 1. Tom Ford’s Cafe Rose perfume. I haven’t the words to describe a scent, but it’s beautiful. A lovely and un-expected gift from Tony (thank you duty free airport shopping!) 2. Laura Mvula. I will be playing her album non-stop when it arrives. […]
