Brownies

made with a top secret- don’t tell the boys ’til they’ve eaten them all- ingredient… prunes!

These brownies are smokey and fudge-y and rich. And almost good for you.

I found the recipe on the back of the Whitworth’s prune packet and gave it a whirl. Typically the only recipe I want isn’t listed on their website, so here it is in case you want to sneak some prunes past your children too:

100g chopped prunes

6 tbsp apple juice (I didn’t have any so used apple sauce and water)

175g plain chocolate

4 eggs

300g dark brown sugar

150g plain flour

50g marshmallows

23cm cake tin

:: Preheat your oven to 180 degrees. Heat the prunes and juice in a saucepan until tender. Melt the chocolate in the prunes.

:: In a large bowl whisk the eggs and sugar, and then add the prune and chocolate mixture and then the dry ingredients. Stir in the marshmallows.

:: Bake for about 30 minutes (mine took longer).

    I use this flapjack recipe
3oz ready-to-eat prunes?3oz ready-to-eat dried apricots?3 1/2oz butter plus extra for greasing?3 1/2oz sugar?5 tablespoons of honey?6oz porridge oats?6oz Dorset muesli of choice (I like the very nutty one)?3oz raisins or sultanas?2 eggs??Grease a 11″ x 9″ shallow baking tin or similar. Heat oven to 180C, gas mark 4. ?Chop the prunes and apricots into small pieces.?Melt the butter, sugar and honey in a saucepan. Take off the heat and mix in the oats, muesli, and all the dried fruit. Leave to cool for 5-10 mins then beat in the eggs. ?Pour the mixture into the tin and level out. Bake in the oven for 20 mins until pale golden but still soft. Leave in the tin until cool then cut into slices.

Ok..are my kids weird in that they will occasionally eat prunes in porridge without any fuss.
Veggies are a whole different kettle of fish.
That said…any excuse to make brownies is a good one in my book. 😉
