My Mums’ needlecase

NeedlecaseMy mum made this little green needlecase when she was at school (can you imagine any school making their pupils do that now? She also had to knit a pair of socks!)

The green fabric is stitched around thin cardboard rectangles and it’s got bright pink lining, with a woollen fabric inner to hold the needles.  Mums’ initials are embroidered in tiny stitches.

Anyway, I’ve been ‘borrowing’ it for years, but it is sadly now beginning to show its age and I really don’t want to damage it any further, or have to repair it. So, last night I made a new one, slightly bigger than my Mums, but otherwise the same.

I don’t think it is anywhere near as charming as the original – but maybe it will age well.

i started out making needle cases last year, based on my grandmothers one, i guess i am living in the wrong country, as no one seemed to know what it was, or why you would need one!! some things are so uniquely british!!

I had to make a needlecase at school too, as a mother’s day gift. My mum still uses it, bless her.

What a lovely treasure to own. I really like the fabric you’ve chosen to use for the new case.
I have a little Collins English Gem Dictionary that my Mum had at school and I use it everyday. It sits at the side of the computer. She had it in the early 1950’s.

we had to knit socks in school, too, and that was only about 15 years ago. i wouldn’t be at all surprised if they still did it now…
