Snail

Sunday’s entertainment was snail racing (we got the idea from Spring Watch).

First, find yourself a snail (educational in itself. Where to look?)

and then brand it with Tippex.

Next mix up some sugary water and paint it on the outside of the kitchen door.

Attach your snail and rush inside to watch through the glass.

Wait. And wait.

Henry’s snail refused to move much at all. Whilst, Joe found himself a very brave, adventurous one.

Who knew snails had such personality?

My youngest is absolutely snail mad.She is always having snail races up windows, doors, walls, arms etc….inside though!
We even have giant African land snails that she raised from eggs.

Springwatch is such a great programme. We’ve loved it yet again this year. My son has spent hours in the garden this last week or so, watching the bats and hedgehogs. He adopted a snail – the idea was to challenge his sister to a snail race, but he lost it – plucked off the path by a passing thrush.

    Great photo, Janet.
We did snailracing at my grandmother’s house when we were small, but there were so many snails in her garden, we got all mixed up and usually ended up because everyone pretended that the fastest snail was his or hers.

    […] pretty sure it’s Joe’s snail not Henry’s. Joe’s okay about it, just a bit […]
