Doves
Thanks again for all your kind comments – Ella at ‘Little Red Caboose’ has requested to see a close up of the birds in the middle of the quilt. So here they are:
The little wooden birds are painted and sewn onto a silk dovecote. The background fabric is my favourite calico (muslin) and is tea stained (I prefer to tea stain with Earl Grey by the way). It is handquilted in a traditional feather wreath pattern.
Some of the pictures for the ‘Beauties’ quilt were a real struggle to make, they just wouldn’t look how I had imagined (the cow in particular) and I still don’t enjoy looking at them now. But these doves just made themselves one night. I hadn’t even designed the quilt at this point – they were made just because I wanted them to exist; and then the quilt just grew up around them.
Oh! and I’ve learnt how to add text to a photo in ‘Paintshop Pro’ – getting pretty clever aren’t I ?!

wonderful little birds on their dovecotes – I just love your attention to detail – magical! I love that you prefer Earl Grey for your staining too, somehow bog standard PGtips just wouldn’t be right for such an amazing quilt.

Your hand quilting is beautiful! I’ve been working on my first ever quilt – a sampler. It’s all pieced together and now I’ve started the hand quilting through all the layers. Not quite so beautiful as your wreath pattern though. Oh well it’s a start right?
