My 15 minutes of ‘fame’

my knit pattern

Yes, this was it – my 15 minutes of fame! Back in 1993 whilst trying to establish myself as a knitwear designer I had one of my designs published in a knitting magazine.

I knitted both of the jumpers myself and remember working round the clock to meet the deadline.

The magazine gave me the yarn and told me to come up with two colourways, but the design was based on a drawing I had in my design portfolio.

Showing my tree of life cross-stitch cushion the other day reminded me of this commission. I had to send the long suffering Tony into the loft to find the copy of the magazine. I never saw the jumpers again and have no rights over the pattern. I don’t think the magazine is published anymore either.

I only ever had 2 designs published and eventually spent most of my time designing swatches which I sold through a knitwear agent (who took 40% commission!) It was hard work but great fun.

So, there you have it a little glimpse of what I got up to as a ‘proper’ designer, before I decided it was time to settle down and earn some money and retrained to become a primary school teacher – which I loved.

That’s amazing. I can’t even begin to imagine the skill involved with designing a garment like this.

This is so cool. I like your design and think it’s actually looking very contemporary. What a funny picture.
