‘Shiny Bauble’
Hello and welcome to my week on Moda’s free ‘Block Heads 4’ quilt-along.
I’ve been designing fabric for Moda for over 10 years now and my latest collection ‘To the Sea’ should be in a quilt shop near you!
If you’re a fan of the seaside like me you’ll love my new book ‘Spoondrift’ which features 25 blocks and two setting options for a sampler quilt. It’s the perfect skill-building project!
Being a Moda designer is a great joy and I love how many fun community building projects they come up with – Block Heads being just one of them! So Blockheaders who’s ready for this week’s block?
I must have been doodling ideas for this quilt-along around Christmas time because my block reminds me of a tree ornament! I have made my 9 inch block in my favourite indigo and cream fabrics and chose to foundation piece it.
Here’s a short video demonstrating how I foundation piece (spoiler, it’s how my Mum taught me and we don’t use paper!). If you’ve avoided foundation piecing before or just don’t get along with stitching through paper then why not give this method a go?

As you can see ‘Shiny bauble’ comes together very easily without needing any accurate cutting or stitching. How striking would a whole quilt be!

With this method you make each element of the block separately, slightly oversized and then trim down to neaten and straighten. Have a go and see if you enjoy foundation piecing as much as I do!
