Stir- up Sunday

When I said last night that I wasn’t doing a handmade Christmas this year I really just meant I wasn’t making the gifts.

I am still making all the food.

So today was our Stir up Sunday, just a week late and we stir up the Christmas cake and not a pudding, but never mind.

boys and cake mix

I have been soaking the dried fruit in sherry for a couple of weeks and today I actually had the 4 hours necessary to make the mixture, involve the boys and bake the cake.

I always use Nigella Lawson’s Christmas cake recipe because she inspired me to start cooking properly. I will always be loyal to Nigella for that gift.

My Mum feels the same about Delia Smith.

So, on Stir up Sunday you gather your family and take turns to stir up the mixture and make a wish for the coming year.

It’s a lovely simple, family tradition and our Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without it.

The festivities have begun!

As have the 5.30am cries of “Mum! Can we open our Advent Calender yet?”

What a coincidence I made my Christmas pudding this weekend too! Mine too have been soaking up the alcohol for simply ages, I am sure they will be delicious, they smelt good whilst steaming. I ususally try and make mine in June when the weather is cooler but the days just fly by dont they!

My son was up at 5am to open his advent calendar on Saturday, goodness only know what time he’ll be up on Christmas Day!

I actually think I still prefer no nonsense Delia with her never fail recipes to Nigella!

Oh well done! My grandmother is making ours this year (ok, she usually does) maybe its time for me to start this lovely tradition. Nigella or Delia though!?

How funny about the advent calendars.. my son is desperate every morning, guzzles down his breakfast.. now mama? can I open it now?
I vote for Nigella everytime… Love Nigella Express and her very dramatic way of presenting always makes me giggle ‘just because its a weekday doesn’t mean dinner can’t be dazzling’.. oh really.. x
